The \u201cManuscrit des Heures \u00e0 l\u2019usage de Rome\u201d is one of the many treasures in the abbey\u2019s library, which contains over two hundred thousand books.<\/p>\n

The bulk of the collection consists of patristic, liturgical and theological works. The Fondation Etrillard: A Key Partner For The Conservation<\/h3>\n

This illuminated incunabulum, dating from 1497, is a work on parchment commissioned by Antoine Chappiel, a printer and bookseller for the Germain Hardouin printing workshop. As a book of hours, it is the most common type of illuminated medieval work, according to the usage in Rome. A Restoration That Requires A Wide Range Of Skills<\/h3>\n

Before a new conservation binding can be made, the signatures have to be dismantled and the parchment leaves cleaned with a Chinese brush to bring the illuminations back to their former glory. Some sheets will require controlled flattening, as well as consolidation and repairs on the gutters. A new seam is planned to support the bookblock, as well as a replacement full parchment binding with whipped nerves on the spine. The document will then be packaged in a custom-made protective box, with a false bottom for storage of store the previous binding and the old sewing support.<\/p>\n
